Cavities are the most common cause leading to a root canal treatment. In most cases, when these are not treated in time, they reach the nerve of the tooth. Tooth vitality is formed by cells and blood vessels. When the nerve or the pulp has been affected, it can swell and infect. Therefore, a root canal treatment, or endodoncy is necessary. Treatment involves the removal of the swollen tissue to then disinfect the interior of the tooth and, finally, seal or fill the root canal. Treatment is completed reconstructing the tooth by means of a resin or a porcelain crown.
